The numerous single-disccompilations never came close to beingrepresentative of her achievement as arecording artist. Culling 43 tracks overeight years and 11 albums is even betterin many ways than issuing an Armatra-ding box set. All of the expected materialfrom the early years is included on discone and many more including The Flightof the Wild Geese from the soundtrackto the film. It covers Armatradings prolificperiod from 1975-1979, where a lot of oldhippies, now upwardly mobile professio-nals seeking mellow escapes from theirrelentless and often ruthless pursuit ofthe good life, got off the bus and remai-ned stuck, listening only to her early re-cords along with those of the Jacksons,Eagles, and James Taylor. The only prob-lem with this is that Armatrading was justbeginning to gain a confidence that ledher to become really adventurous, takinghuge chances with both her songwritingand production styles in the 1980s. Shebecame a pop singer whose lyrics wereanything but pop and whose music ex-panded the boundaries of pop to includereggae, jazz, and slippery folk music.Admittedly, the results were never lessthan utterly compelling. Disc two featuresall four tracks from the excellent HowCruel EP, including the reggae soul-dren-ched bluster of Rosie, the title track andHe Wants Her, with its dubbed-outdrums and snaky guitar slinking throughher sensual vocal. Eight cuts from theMe Myself I album represent the vast ma-jority of it; it also marked Armatradingsfirst true rock & roll outing.
