Greek and Roman artists often depicted Pan flaying an instrument consisting of seven lengths of cane bound together.As well as Europe (including Rumania and Hungary) the panpipes have originated from many far-flung corners of the world: from China, where sixteen bound pipes were favoured: from ancient Peru, where, as well as cane, they were made of red pottery and green soapstone (cane panpipes are still played in the Andes region today): from Melanesia: and the Solomon Islands, where the panpipes are played together as a band at funeral dances.The hey-day of the panpipes in Europe was from the tenth to the thirteenth centuries, during the time of the medieval troubadours. They were constructed in a semi-circular, curved shape to make playing easier and more fluent. The style of medieval playing was probably similar to the way in which South American Indians still play today.The panpipes enjoyed a temporary revival of popularity in England at the beginning of the 19th century where they were taken up by groups of travelling musicians, calling themselves Pandeaus, who went about the country giving performances. Its a sentiment not far remov-ed from Joe Strummers exhortation ofNo Elvis Beatles and the Rolling Stonesin 1977!, but he sang that in 1977, befo-re Elvis died, seven years after the Beat-les breakup, and when Jumpin JackFlash wasnt even ten years old. TheDead 60s released their eponymous de-but album in 2005 - nearly 30 years afterthe Clash released their debut. But wherethe Clash preached revolution, the Dead60s practice tradition, using the punk ofthe late 70s as a sacred text, never da-ring to deviate from what was done befo-re. They may synthesize, though: often,the band sounds like Joe Jackson front-ing the Clash or the Specials, as they al-ternate between strident three-chord ant-hems and elastic dub-inspired punk-reg-gae. Its an appealing sound and the bandis not only tight, but theyre reasonablygood songwriters, too, on both the rock-ers and spooky, spacy reggae. Neverthe-less, the entire enterprise seems a littletoo tasteful and respectful, as if the groupwere so concerned with getting it right,theyre reluctant to let loose. Plus, theresthat nagging question of how does a bandwhose very name tears down one era ofrock get away with fetishizing another ti-me from the distant past, it makes it seemas if the Dead 60s are living in the pastinstead of moving forward, and their al-bum, as enjoyable as it is, doesnt dispelthat notion. Its kind of like listening to theStray Cats in 1982 - they recreated theglory days of Carl Perkins and Gene Vin-cent, keeping rockabilly alive 26 years af-ter its heyday. The Dead 60s do the samething with punk but theres not only a gre-ater distance between them and punkthan there was between the Stray Catsand rockabilly. The Dead 60s are goodmusicians and their basic sound is good,even if it is heavily indebted to punk andska revival.
