He fought seemingly endless batt-les with neighborhood figures who wereagainst his activities, and managed to puton shows featuring unique mixes of talentsuch as Lenny Bruce opening for the Mot-hers of Invention, plays by LeRoi Jonesheadlined by The Byrds, and a reading bypoets Andrei Voznesensky and LawrenceFerlinghetti at a Jefferson Airplane show.He also began booking black artists whohad never before played for white audien-ces, including Otis Redding, B.B. King,Lightning Hopkins, Chuck Berry, HowlinWolf and Muddy Waters. Graham alsobrought the Doors and Jimi Hendrix toSan Francisco for the first time and sta-ged the Whos first San Francisco show,a two-night set held at the Fillmore.Graham then founded a festival in Oak-land, California, where Led Zeppelin, theEagles and the Grateful Dead, among se-veral other well-known rock bands, playedbefore more than 50,000 people, and sta-ged arena rock tours by George Harrison,Bob Dylan and Crosby, Stills, Nash andYoung. In 1975, Graham helped createthe rock merchandising industry with hisWinterland Productions, the first retailerof T-shirts that allowed musicians to recei-ve royalties.In 1976, Graham put on The Last Waltz,a farewell concert by the Band and later,the title of a film about the concert direc-ted by Martin Scorsese. In 1981, he plan-ned and managed the Rolling Stones co-lossal stadium tour of the United States.In 1985, Graham produced the AmericanLive Aid concert at JFK Stadium in Phila-delphia, Pennsylvania, raising more than$45 million to fight hunger in Africa. Thefollowing year, he put together the six-cityConspiracy of Hope tour to celebrate the25th anniversary of Amnesty Internationala concert featuring U2, the Police, PeterGabriel and Lou Reed, among several ot-her rockers of the time.
