Posthu-mous efforts often feel incomplete, Harri-sons albums were frequently inconsistentand Lynne favors ornate, cinematic pro-ductions that run contrary to Georges de-sire for this project to be simple and lowkey -- nothing that would suggest thatBrainwashed would be a success.Defying all odds, Brainwashed isnt just asuccess, its one of the finest records Har-rison ever made. Yes, it doesnt achievethe splendor of All Things Must Pass, noris it quite of its time like both Living in theMaterial World and Cloud Nine were, butits a quiet, subtle gem, one that strikesclose to the heart of Harrisons music. Itsintimate, alternately insightful and cheer-fully lightweight, balancing his trademarkblack humor with silliness and good humor.Anyone searching the album for his viewson mortality - as he faced not only cancerbut an attacker that nearly took his life -will surely find it, but this is not a somberalbum, it is a warm album, the sound ofsomeone enjoying life without losing hiswry sense of humor. This same spirit car-ries over to the music, with Harrison aban-doning the idea of getting a hit and simplyrelaxing, primarily by playing a lot of uku-lele and guitar. There arent any majorsongs here and perhaps a tune or twocould be pegged as throwaways by thecynical, but there are no down momentsand it all holds together well - better thanmost Harrison albums -- and its a fittingway to say goodbye, every bit as good asDouble Fantasy and, in some respects,even sweeter.
