On its ownmerits, though, its a fairly respectablesoul-rock album. Hendrix was referringto his own material as electric churchmusic on some occasions in the late 60s,and likely he had something like the soul-funk-rock fusion of Band of Gypsys inmind when he conceived this. Of courseMiles played in Band of Gypsys. His wri-ting and singing benefit from not beingplaced within the context of a band inwhich Hendrix was primarily responsiblefor those functions, as was the case onthe Band of Gypsys album.
