Four (4) Rare Fantastic & ClassicBuddy Miles Albums 2CD (2021)- Expressway To Your Skull 1968- Electric Church 1969- Them Changes 1970- We Got To Live Together 1970Its impossible to talk about Buddy Mileswithout mentioning Jimi Hendrix.Best known as the drummer in Jimi Hen-drixs Band of Gypsys, Buddy Miles alsohad a lengthy solo career that drew fromrock blues soul and funk in varying com-binations.Buddy Miles debut at the Monterey PopFestival the Electric Flag which splinteredin 1968.Miles split to form his own group, the si-milarly eclectic Buddy Miles Express.Signed to Mercury, the group issued itsdebut album, Expressway to Your Skull,in 1968, with Miles fellow Monterey Popalum Jimi Hendrix in the producers chair. In turn, Miles played on Hendrixs ElectricLadyland album. Hendrix also producedthe Miles Express follow-up 1969s Elec-tric Church. Hendrix, Miles, and bassistBilly Cox formed Band of Gypsys, one ofthe first all-Black rock bands. Miles depar-ted Band of Gypsys in 1970, replaced byExperience drummer Mitch Mitchell.Genre:Funk, blues-rock, funk-rock,soul-rock, hard-rock, classic rockDisc 1Buddy Miles Express:Expressway To Your Skull (1968)Although Buddy Miles alchemical fusionof psychedelia, blues, and soul did nottruly coalesce until his masterpiece ThemChanges, his debut LP, Expressway toYour Skull, remains an inspired and origi-nal statement of intent, a record thatsboth timeless and an unmistakable pro-duct of counterculture consciousness. Each of the albums seven songs is a fas-cinating montage of sounds and styles -acid-fuzz guitar collides with zig-zaggingfunk horns and shrieking keyboards meetjuke joint blues riffs head on. The mate-rial is brilliant, its twists and turns naviga-ted by Miles deeply soulful vocals andmonster drumming.01. Trainhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsIWIS4evMQ02. Let Your Lovelight Shine03. Spot On The WallBuddy Miles Express:Electric Church (1969)More than half of the original LP produ-ced by the Master Himself, Jimi Hendrix.Buddy Miles second album (credited toBuddy Miles Express) gets most of its at-tention in retrospect for the role of JimiHendrix who produced part of it and play-ed on some tracks as well. On its ownmerits, though, its a fairly respectablesoul-rock album. Hendrix was referringto his own material as electric churchmusic on some occasions in the late 60s,and likely he had something like the soul-funk-rock fusion of Band of Gypsys inmind when he conceived this. Of courseMiles played in Band of Gypsys. His wri-ting and singing benefit from not beingplaced within the context of a band inwhich Hendrix was primarily responsiblefor those functions, as was the case onthe Band of Gypsys album. The songsare mostly vehicles for Miles high soulfulvocals and the energetic funky arrange-ments, but as such things go theyre pret-ty solid and pleasurable. 69 FreedomSpecial is a true highlight which has so-me good Hendrix wah-wah licks andMiss Lady, on which Jimi plays in a mo-re conventional R&B style. While the ma-jority of this is feel-good and brassy Milesdoes show hes capable of handling moretender soul melodies and sentiments inCigarettes & Coffee and My Chant.08. Wrap It UpDisc 2Buddy Miles:Them Changes (1970)This 1970 release by former Band ofGypsys drummer Buddy Miles is, quitesimply, one of the great lost treasures ofsoul-inspired rock music. From the funkydrive of the title track to Miles plaintivesinging on I Still Love You, Anyway andGreg Allmans Dreams, the album is fil-led with the best qualities of both genres. Not only does Miles prove himself to be agreat interpreter of songs, but with the tit-le track and Hearts Delight, he demon-strates his ability to write solid material onhis own. Complemented by the MemphisHorns, Miles songs soar and swing ashard as any Stax release, and his voicecombines the nuance of soul singing withthe grit of rock. Them Changes is defini-tely a true masterpiece.01. Them Changeshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DDbjm_fId8The song Them Changes made the USTop 40 spending nearly 18 months (!)on the charts.02.
