Frank Soda: Saturday Night Getaway (1981) DigiPak, UusiA wild and talented Toronto guitarist/vocalist, Frank Soda, with a frenzied sense of humor. With backing from bassist Charles Towers and drummer John Lechausser, Frank Soda & the Imps debuted with In the Tube in 1979 and a self-titled platter in 1980. Sodas shows involved bizarre getups and climaxed with a television exploding on his head. Soda worked with Canadian ingenue Lee Aaron on her inaugural, The Lee Aaron Project, which also included members of Triumph and Santers. Soda recorded Saturday Night Getaway in 1981 and dropped out of sight after Adventures of a Sodaman in 1983. After relocating to Vancouver Soda continues to play live, hes been fairly quiet from a recording perspective.At last on CD. In 1981 Frank Soda went solo. He dragged along a number of staple numbers to finally redo them in the studio. Moon Man is given a more realized and more fitting treatment in its studio rendition. (Theres even a Jethro Tull-style flute!) The funk-ish Skin Graft is based on an incident Soda had with one of his many exploding pieces of headgear, which burned his hair and skin. The version of Born to be Wild gives it a slight rhythmic twist that actually makes it worth a listen or two. Throughout, Soda shows off more of the guitar ability that he distinguished himself with during live shows, and that alone guarantees a more satisfying album. Tom Savinis effects are brilliantly and disgustingly realized, with screwdrivers in the head, chunks of flesh bitten from necks, scalps lopped off with helicopter blades, and so on, but this is really more of an action movie than either horror or satire, resembling a particularly gory version of Rio Bravo more than it does its predecessor. Romero fills the film with soldiers, bikers, and other action-movie stalwarts, prefiguring his more obscure genre melding in Knightriders (1981). At one time, laying claim to the title Queen of the Blues was of paramount importance to powerhouse singers like Koko Taylor and Etta James, because it translated into financial success, if only within their market niche. Now that they understandably crave wider recognition after their many years of notable work, however, such a designation might well prove a roadblock to success because of the blues reputation as an arcane music.Etta James is a little further along in her effort to come up with a more contemporary sound.
