He fought seemingly endless batt-les with neighborhood figures who wereagainst his activities, and managed to puton shows featuring unique mixes of talentsuch as Lenny Bruce opening for the Mot-hers of Invention, plays by LeRoi Jonesheadlined by The Byrds, and a reading bypoets Andrei Voznesensky and LawrenceFerlinghetti at a Jefferson Airplane show.He also began booking black artists whohad never before played for white audien-ces, including Otis Redding, B.B. King,Lightning Hopkins, Chuck Berry, HowlinWolf and Muddy Waters.
