The stocking material consisted of 63 groups and 32 522 individuals in 19792005. Of these, 2142 recoveries were obtained. Based on these data, temporal and spatial distribution, growth and migration speed of the fish as well as catch and proportion of different fishing gear in the catch were analysed. In addition, effects of abundance of vendace (Coregonus albula), an important prey species, on the growth and spatial distribution of landlocked salmon were studied. Majority (61%) of the recoveries were caught during the first year in the lake. The proportions in the second and third years were 31% and 6%, respectively. Due to short recapture time, the growth potential of salmon was poorly utilised. The mean recovery percent of stocking groups was 6.7% and uncorrected catch 59 kg per thousand individuals stocked. The mean net catch (total catch subtracted by total mass of stocked smolts) was clearly negative. Large stocking size increased the number of recoveries, and the larger the fish the greater part of them survived until minimum legal size (total length 40 cm). Most important fishing gear were different gillnets (39.2% of recoveries) as well as rod and line (27.3%). The importance of rod and line fishing has increased during recent years whereas the opposite trend was observed in the case of small mesh gillnets. There were clear gear-specific differences in size distributions and mean lengths of salmon.
