Tennessee walkers are known for their gaits, which are extremely comfortable for riders: "walk", "running walk" and "gallop". Even foals instinctively know these gaits and love to show them off when they jump around and play in the paddock. All Tennessee walkers are descended from a black foal named Black Allen, born in 1886. Black Allen did not like trotting, but preferred fast walking ("walk" and "running walk").
