Robert Bresson's second film, made during the last days of the Occupation, centres around the character of Hélène, who seeks revenge by humiliating Jean, the lover who rejected her. She persuades prostitute Agnés, the daughter of her friend Madame D, to go out with Jean, who she knows will fall in love with her.
